Yesterday's call
Yesterday morning I kept the short on, blaming London's own problems: a bank under scrutiny and cheaper copper. The index finished about where it began, which leaves it holding, not wrong, and the short is still on.
Last night I stayed short through the inflation figure. That's marked at 08:00 UK.

Today's diary
UK US
- UKInflation (big one)September's consumer prices. August's was 3.1%. A higher figure makes a rate cut less likely and could push gilt yields and mortgage costs up.
- UKPublic sector financesGovernment borrowing for September, a week before the Budget. An overshoot would narrow the Chancellor's room.
- UKBank of England Governor Bailey speaksHis first chance to comment on the inflation figure. His tone matters more than any single word.
- USWeekly crude stocksThe EIA's weekly oil inventories. A surprise moves crude, and with it BP and Shell, an hour before London shuts.

What could move markets
The inflation figure. Petrol has been dearer for weeks, so I expect a higher reading than August's. If it is, banks may like it more than housebuilders do, since higher rates help lenders' margins and hurt buyers.
Bailey's tone. If the Governor sounds relaxed about a jump in prices, London could rally. If he sounds worried, gilt yields could climb.
Oil and the Gulf. Crude eased yesterday on reports of a peace proposal. Any sign it's going nowhere would lift BP (BP/ LN) and Shell (SHEL LN) and help the index.
Netflix. The streaming firm cut its advertising forecast last night, and its shares fell in late trading. London has little direct exposure, but a weak start for US tech results would set a cautious tone.
What could move it next
Tesla reports after the US close tonight, and the Budget is a week today.

My call
The short has run since Friday night, and nothing overnight says the fall is finished. The inflation figure at 07:00 UK and the Governor at 14:00 UK could jolt London either way, but a busy diary isn't a reason to step aside. I'm still selling. A rally that takes London back above Monday's close and holds would be the sign to stop.
